The Dream Book of Self-Knowledge

Mare

  • the mare symbolizes the dynamic passion of the female component, which weakens and batters the conscious male aspect and moves it back to sexuality and to instinctual experiences; the mares of Diomedes in Greek mythology have practically the same meaning and are the antithesis of the mythological Cretan bull (female – male).
  • like the Celtic goddess Epona, the mare was venerated from Britain to Rome as the "Horse Goddess," and forms the cult of the Mother Goddess, expresses sexual power, sexuality and fertility.
  • in mastering the dynamic passion of the female component the dangerous mare turns into an easily controlled cow (symbol of family life).
