- an ugly house: synonymous with the state of a person's soul, synonymous with the dreamer's true state.
- an ugly city: the dreamer is beginning to be repulsed by everyday earthly life and longs for a fuller emotional life.
- ugly people: beauty and ugliness alternate in life like day and night, so in the vibrant antitheses of the monotone circle of the material world a person loses himself in wanting the beautiful and then later in rejecting the ugly; one way out of this vicious circle is the gradual unification of antitheses (more on this in the Anima – Animus archetype and in a higher phase in the Coniunctio archetype), which shows the magical power of inner freedom from which a person masters his life and his death.
