*10 A stupa is a Buddhist building, one of the main symbols of Buddhism and a central point of temples and monasteries. This was originally a burial mound for the remains of the historical Buddha, Buddhist saints and important Buddhist figures. A stupa can also mean the ground plan of the aforementioned structures; this ground plan appears as the basis of the ritual creation of a mandala*21 in Buddhist tradition.
