*76 Osho was born in India in 11 December 1931 and achieved enlightenment at the age of twenty-one. After completing his academic studies he taught philosophy at the university in Jabalpur. His unconventional views have many obdurate opponents, but also ardent proponents. He never minced words and frankly expressed his convictions; he warned people of destructive delusional beliefs and tried to instill in them the need for a deep purifying process. Since many people of the West identified with his view, it was not surprising that communes bearing his name and views began to appear in the USA and other Western countries. Osho died on 19 January 1990 under unclear circumstances, but his unconventional teachings have endured in many books and in the minds of many people.
