The Dream Book of Self-Knowledge

Moon

  • Luna is the empress of the emotional anima and expresses the active female principle (applies for both men and women).
  • an accompaniment of the Self archetype.
  • behind the clouds: a temporarily hindered approach to the female component of the soul.
  • fixed in the same place in the sky: the halted process of understanding the emotional anima can be the result of an overly elevated femininity and the ensuing imbalance between the male and female component of the soul.
  • full moon: symbolizes the full effect of the bright positive part of the female component of the soul and sometimes even the end of a specific period, specific work (usually on the inner field of self-improvement).
  • new moon: symbolizes the full effect of the dark negative part of the female component of the soul.
  • full or new: intensifies the intuitive understanding of divine experiences.
  • first and last quarter: a balanced mutual effect of the dark negative and bright positive part of the female component of the soul.
  • a landscape flooded with moonlight: the instinctual essence of the land and everything arising from it is illuminated by the feelings of the female nature.
  • a meteor falling from places where the moon shines: happiness and a blessing for the emotional and spiritual life come from an understanding of the emotional anima, but this image is a bad sign for the materialistic life which usually means loss and financial woes.
  • in unnatural movement (usually extremely fast movement): rapid development in understanding the male and female element leading to unity causes in the unconscious (and therefore also in dreams) phenomena linked to an unnatural movement of the moon (emotional anima) or sun (emotional animus).
  • far side of the moon: the secret and hard-to-know part of the emotional anima.
  • observable changes on the Moon's surface: dramatic development of understanding the female emotional component (emotional anima).
  • geologically active Moon: completing the transformations of instincts in feelings and reconstruction of emotional level; important achievement in heading toward the Spirit realm.
  • flying to the Moon: the moon's surface cannot be reached without a deep understanding of the principle of the emotional anima.
  • fighting on the Moon: attempt to dominate or impose will in struggle of male and female emotional component (see Anima – Animus archetype).
  • being on the Moon in a spacesuit: the dreamer must find the way to a full understanding of the principle of emotional anima so that he can breathe, without an air supply from earth, the moon's emotional atmosphere, which obviously has nothing in common with the physical world and the vacuum on the moon's surface.
  • watching Earth from the Moon's surface: a view from the emotional level (Moon) to the instinctual level (Earth).
  • exploring the Moon: the dreamer is actively trying to reveal the secrets of the emotional anima and its influence on his life.
  • a factory on the Moon: developing relationships and the content of the mind on an emotional level.
  • with living nature: the dreamer has significantly deepened his relationship to the emotional anima and is therefore able to awaken life on the moon's hitherto dead surface.
  • our Moon: considered to be the emotional anima in the initial phases of spiritual development; fights between instinctual and emotional components take place on the Moon's surface.
  • a second moon (usually red or with reddish shades): a symbol of the clash of emotional and spiritual components; the color of the moon tells of the nature of transformed emotions.
  • a third moon: the clash of spiritual components and of the approaching light of knowledge (that which is beyond the spiritual and all antitheses).
  • three moons in a single image: shows a person that wants to harmonize all components of his being in a single whole: our moon represents the female part of the soul filled with emotions and instincts; the second moon symbolizes the female part of the soul filled with spiritual ideas and emotions and the third moon is a transition from a spiritual understanding to definitive knowledge.
  • in addition to inner processes of the human psyche it can also show expected planetary development in dramatic visions: see Past and Future Visions archetype.
  • ice on the Moon: spiritual elements are penetrating to the emotional level.
  • seeing a starry sky without a moon or sun: an important dream that shows achieved unity (this is not a permanent state) of the male and female element (emotional anima or animus are not seen here); such a sky often opens extrasensory perception.
  • a silver moon (emotional anima) and golden sun (emotional animus) in union: the unification of antitheses and a frequent image of savants in alchemy.
  • according to alchemy, it has its "earthly representative" – which is mercury (just as sulfur represents the Sun): the two elements, like both celestial bodies, are antitheses of the male and female principle (see Alchemist archetype).
  • lunar eclipse: the dreamer has a unique chance to know a rare psychic state, in which the full effect of the bright positive part of the female component of the soul (the full moon) is temporarily replaced by the full effect of the dark negative part of the female part of the soul (sunlight blocked by the earth's shadow); after the eclipse the positive part of the female component of the soul returns (the full moon).
  • absorption of the moon and sun in a single image: the final unification of antitheses.
